In this painting Pieter van den Velde depicted the owners of a castle who have returned to their estate from the city on a sailing-ship. After their journey by river, the noble couple stroll along the bank accompanied by a page, while their carriage is being disembarked. The arrival of the master and mistress of the castle goes almost unnoticed by the shepherds, fishermen and bathers near the boat. The events of the painting take place against the background of a river landscape that ends with the depiction of a city with a cathedral and windmills.
